Pirates squeak in to second place in soccer league finale

Thanks to undefeated Charles Wright, the Vashon boys soccer team secured second place in the Nisqually League, giving the Pirates a potentially much easier early playoff schedule.

Thanks to undefeated Charles Wright, the Vashon boys soccer team secured second place in the Nisqually League, giving the Pirates a potentially much easier early playoff schedule.

While Vashon was losing 4-0 to the fired up Orting Cardinals, the Tarriers were pounding Cascade Christian by the same score. Final standings have Charles Wright in first with 30 points, Vashon second with 18 and Cascade Christian and Orting tied for third with 17.

Orting and Cascade Christian, tied in both their regular-season games, play a tie-breaker tomorrow, April 30, to determine seeding. Other first round playoff pairings depend on the results of Port Townsend’s last two Olympic League games today and tomorrow.

Vashon’s first playoff game is tentatively scheduled for May 5. Check the Vashon High School Web site for opponent and location.

Orting took charge of the Tuesday game quickly, scoring in the fourth minute. The Cardinals scored again in the 14th minute. In the second half Orting scored in the 57th minute and put the game out of reach with a final goal in the 70th minute.

Vashon’s JV closed their season with a 2-1 win over Orting’s JV. Nathan Osgood got his goal in the 18th minute with an assist from Lucian Pizzano. Pizzano scored the second Pirate goal in the 35th minute with assists going to Ezra Koenig and Osgood. Brad Sanders got the Orting score with a free kick in the 78th minute.
