Runners set personal bests at season’s first meet

Vashon’s cross-country teams hit their stride this past week as the first third of the season begins to take shape.

After two smaller Nisqually and Emerald City League meets, the Pirates traveled to the 56-team Bellevue Invitational last Saturday at a sunny Lake Sammamish State Park. Out of the 15 Pirates that made their way east, seven set personal bests.

Leading the Pirate boys’ team this year in the 5k races are senior Gianno Waller and sophomore Cole Parks. Finishing with an impressive kick at Lake Sammamish was team captain, senior Theo Hu.

On the girls’ team this year, freshman Ella Yarkin and team captain Lucy Boyle, are leading the team, followed by sophomore Ellie Lande.

This Saturday, the Pirates will travel to University Place to run in the 22nd Annual Curtis Invitational where 58 teams will provide the Pirates with a great opportunity to rub shoulders and elbows with very stiff competition. This Saturday also marks the first chance for Vashon’s middle school harriers to test their mettle in the community open race.

The Pirates return home on Tuesday, Oct. 3 for their only home meet of the year, with the start and finish in the McMurray sports fields and a tour of the schools’ grass and forest trails.
