VHS golf sends three to district tournament

The team competed in the Nisqually League tournament at Hawks Prairie Golf Club in Lacey.

On Tuesday, May 7, the Vashon High School varsity golf team competed in the Nisqually League tournament at Hawks Prairie Golf Club in Lacey, represented by Marshall Wade, Avery Grace, Will Zuvela, Everett Merkl, Winter McCoy, Pierson Guenther and Molly Wing.

Marshall, Avery, and Molly all played well enough to advance to the district tournament, which will also be held at Hawks Prairie Golf Club Friday, May 16th. Marshall shot a 91, Avery shot a 97, and Molly shot a 124 to qualify.

Marshall struggled on the front nine, posting a 50 at the turn. He turned it around on the back, however, posting a 41, including holing out a pitch shot from 50 yards on the 18th hole.

Avery advanced in dramatic fashion as well. He was just one stroke from not qualifying, but managed to save a stroke on the 13th hole. He found his ball resting in a water hazard, but the ball was playable. He made a miraculous shot from the water to near the green, saving the one stroke that would make the difference.

Molly also made a big turnaround. This was Molly’s first major tournament and nerves got the best of her on the front nine, where she posted a 69. But she turned it around on the back nine, posting a 55 for a total of 124 and advancing by five strokes.

Paul Whalen is the VHS golf coach.
