VHS golfer advances to District Championships

He has an excellent chance to qualify for the State tournament

The Nisqually League golf championship was held at the Gold Mountain, Olympic Course, on Thursday, May 9. Vashon High School had six participating players: Koen Shaw, Jake Harrah, Lewis Kanagy, Colin Pottinger, Matthew Jones and Chris Folau. Four of the players — Shaw, Harrah, Kanagy and Pottinger advanced on to the second nine of the tournament.

Shaw, the team’s number one player this year, shot 83 and finished sixth in the championship. This means he advanced to play in the District championship May 15, after press time, at Gold Mountain. He has an excellent chance to qualify for the State tournament to be held at the Olympic Country Club the following week. Pottinger, a first year player, shot his best nine score of 48, the second nine of the tournament.

The golf team will lose seniors Pottinger, Kanagy and Chavez next year. Returning letterman will be sophomores Shaw and Folau, along with juniors Harrah and Jones. The three seniors that played this year were new golfers and contributed to the success of our season.

Coach Paul Wahlen is looking forward to an expanded program next season for both girls and boys. The coaches also want to thank the Vashon Golf & Swim Club for its continued support of the golf program.
