VHS track & field athletes achieve personal bests

The Vashon High School track and field team traveled to Charles Wright Academy to compete in the third conference meet of the season Thursday, April 18.

Despite battling illness and injury, many Pirate athletes continued to post personal records (PR) in competition. Junior fielder Logan Higuera took the top spot overall in the javelin with a record throw of 133 feet, 4 inches. Top performers in the distance events included senior Lucy Boyle, who bested her personal record by placing second in the 3,200-meter contest with a time of 13:08.40 and Sean Robertson in the 800 meter with a personal record of 2:20.87 to finish in fifth place.

The Pirate sprinters also made a strong showing with senior Sol Dehnert tying for third overall in the 100 meter with a PR of 12.22 seconds, while teammates Jess Leysath and Alex Lee both recorded PRs to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Junior Jacqueline Bostock placed third in the 100 meter with a time of 13.72. The men’s 4 x 100 relay team of Kalen Cunningham, Sol Dehnert, Jess Leysath and Zavier Delgado-Williams narrowly missed a first-place finish after a surprise come-from-behind victory by Cascade Christian stunned the Pirates. Hurdlers Alex Macomber-Straight, Schuyler Ricks, Luca Kuzma, Anthony Mathias, Blake Gibbons and Isabella Mediavilla each posted personal bests in their events.

In long jump, Dehnert placed sevond place overall with a PR of 19 feet, 8 inches for the Pirates and Grace Christie in third with a jump of 14 feet, 9 inches. Dalton Kearns placed third in the triple jump with a personal record of 31 feet and 6.25 inches. Finian Long was the top high jumper for Vashon, placing fifth.

The Pirates next meet is at 3:30 today, April 25, at home.
