The Vashon High School track and field team competed at the District championship last Friday and Saturday at Renton Memorial Stadium. Two Vashon athletes — seniors Lauren Jenks and Kat Andrus — won district titles and will move on to compete at the 1A State track meet this weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Jenks took first place in the 800-meter sprint with a time of 2:28. The race started with Jenks running a controlled first lap while Julia Hanly from Charles Wright Academy pushed the pace. On the second lap, Jenks surged with 300 meters to go and passed Hanly before showing her strength and holding off Hanly and the rest of the pack. The previous day, Jenks placed fifth in the mile run with a time of 5:50.

Meanwhile, Andrus took the District title in both the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 3.25 inches and took first place in the javelin with a throw of 100 feet 9 inches. Andrus also placed second in the triple jump (34 feet 11.50 inches) which has also qualified her for the state meet in that event.

In the long jump, Pirate Analeah Olsen finished sixth and Shea Bray finished seventh for the Pirates. Noah Edmonds finished fourth in the boys 400 meters. Edmonds was also on the boys’ 4×100 meter relay team along with his teammates Kalen Cunningham, Evan Stephanick and Jess Leysath. The team placed seventh overall. The girls 4×100 meter relay team, which included Bray, Olsen, Ava Bostock, and Jacquelyn Bostock, finished fourth overall representing the Pirates at the West Central District track and field meet.
