Week four of girls’ tennis brings two more wins

Their record now stands at 3 and 0.

The Vashon High School (VHS) girls’ tennis team has completed week four of the season, with two more wins, bringing their record to 3 and 0.

On Monday, March 21, the team was hosted by Life Christian Academy (LCA) at the Lakewood Racquet club. The weather was brisk but remained dry and allowed both varsity and JV squads to complete their matches. LCA went out to a two-match lead, with victories from both of their excellent singles players, winning in straight sets. All three VHS doubles teams came through with straight-set victories to take the meet 3-2.

  • #1 Singles – Kaiya Van Brost 0-6, 06
  • #2 Singles – Ellis Giller 6-7, 1-6
  • #1 Doubles – Natalia Matusky/Maren MacLean 6-3, 6-2
  • #2 Doubles – Myra Butler Jessica Levin 6-0, 6-1
  • #3 Doubles – Sailor Frith/Maddie Youman 6-0, 6-4

There were five junior varsity matches, played by the following players, with all but one winning:

Clementine Gripman Whistler/Eliza Pinckney; Ciarra Matthias/Tuula Beck; Diana Trundle-Strachan/Paloma Freda; Cassie Paetkau/Jessica Levin; and Stella Wahanik/Ada Umbach.

The Pirates hosted Charles Wright Academy (CWA) Friday, March 24 — a cold and blustery day. The team enjoyed plenty of support from their families and classmates, who filled the stands and lined the fence of the home court.

CWA has the reigning district singles champion, who dispatched Kaiya Van Brost in straight sets 0-6, 0-6. Ellis Giller (VHS), playing #2 singles, bested her opponent at 6-0, 6-0.

The most dynamic match was played between the schools’ #2 doubles teams. Myra and Jessica fought off break points to eventually take the first set 7-5. The second set was a see-saw affair, with both teams exchanging the lead until they reached the set-defining tiebreaker, in which VHS won 7/4 and sealed the team victory.
