Published June 25, 2005

Ethel Priebe, a long-time resident of Vashon Island, died June 25, 2005, at the Vashon Community Care Center. She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Priebe was born April 2, 1909, to Charles and Mary Ann Hutter in London, England. Her family immigrated to the Seattle area when she was a young child.

She met Norman Priebe while attending Edmonds High School and they were married on New Year’s Day in 1929. They settled in Seattle where Norman was an engineer for the telephone company and Ethel worked for a clothing company. They established a summer home on Vashon in 1944 and moved permanently to the Island in 1947.

She was an enthusiastic gardener and spent much of her time creating flower gardens at her home on the west side of Vashon. She also enjoyed painting, crafts, sewing and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her two sons, Dennis of Vashon and Reynold and his wife Sally of Normandy Park; two grandsons, Dean and his wife Diane Priebe of Leavenworth and David and his wife Lori Priebe of Bellevue, and two great grandsons.

Her husband died earlier.

At her request, there were no services. Donations in her memory may be made to Vashon Community Care Center.

Arrangements were entrusted to Island Funeral Service of Vashon.
