Magic takes to the stage with Vashon Dance Academy’s ‘Aladdin’

Magic will take the stage this weekend when the Vashon Dance Academy dances to life the perennial favorite tale “Aladdin.”
Jasmine and Aladdin, along with their exotic pals, the genies and magical wishes, will be joined by the academy’s imaginative renderings of power, snakes, sand dunes and cave spirits, as well as the bedazzling rubies, diamonds and emeralds. A magic carpet and a love potion each save the day.
The show is produced by Dance!Vashon, a nonprofit organization that helps to support the Vashon Dance Academy. “Aladdin” is Dance!Vashon’s 17th production.
Eva Cyra and Silvia Henley alternate the role of Jasmine. Charlotte Schoen and graduating senior Rachael Thomas share that of Jafara, the traitorous vizier to the sultan. In addition to Thomas, graduating senior dancers include Allison Spencer as Jeannie, Yarden Blausapp as emeralds and Kaia Boonzaier as the snake charmer.
The Vashon Dance Academy students work alongside their teachers to develop original choreography under the artistic direction of Cheryl Krown. Ballet teacher Julie Gibson assists with choreography and the intensive preparation of the show.
Krown said the show is a true community production with more than 130 dancers.
“We are excited for the audience to enjoy a show that has a high energy mix of romance, conflict, power, friendship and, of course, humor,” Krown said.
“Aladdin” will run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. plus Saturday and Sunday matinees at 1:30 p.m. All shows will be at the Vashon High School theater. Tickets, $15 for adults, $11 for students, are available at Vashon Bookshop and Pampered Paws. Shows typically sell out.
