Students from McMurray Middle School’s Executive Council announced Friday that they have started an initiative to raise money for the Okanagen Fire Department, a small, volunteer department in Eastern Washington that was ravaged by the recent wildfires. Issac Escovedo, a seventh-grader at McMurray on the Executive Council said that the citizens and volunteer firefighters are left with almost nothing and need to replace fire gear damaged in the fires.
“If we’re old enough to understand what these fires did to our state, then we’re old enough to take responsibility and help without compensation,” Escovedo told his classmates Friday.
The students will be placing fire boots, helmets and donation boxes throughout the campus and the island to ask for donations from the community. Students will be at the VHS home football game on Friday, Oct. 2, with a boot to collect money and will be at Thriftway on Saturday, Sept. 26, having a bake sale. Donations will be accepted through Sunday, Oct. 11. The Reverse the Wildfires fundraiser is one of two initiatives that the McMurray Executive Council will organize this year.
