Mindfulness needed in writing

I read with interest Kathryn True’s Beachcomber article outlining the commendable topic of proper etiquette when viewing life on Vashon’s beaches at low tide. I was disheartened by the article’s use of the movie King Kong to dramatize the issue.
King Kong is part of the unfortunately long list of movies which both blatantly and subtlety exploit racism in the United States to make a profit (huge black oversexed “ape” kidnaps innocent vulnerable white woman who needs society to come to her rescue by killing this threat). While I know the use of this racist imagery was unintentional, we all need to be mindful of the impact these images have on Black Bodies/Bodies of Culture and to be more aware of the ongoing racism occurring in our country.
