Share the road with cyclists on Saturday
After scrambling to stage a virus-plagued, smoke-delayed and virtual version of Passport2Pain (P2P) bike ride last September, organizers are expecting as many as 400 riders on Saturday, Sept. 11 for the 10th in-person rendition of the Vashon Island Rowing Club’s off-beat and increasingly famous annual fundraiser.
Fully vaccinated riders from at least seven states will set out from the Jensen Point parking lot at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning, in groups of two or three. They will be spaced about a minute apart to minimize clumps of bicyclists on the island’s roads and maximize the distance between riders, who will be reminded that the event is a ride, not a race.
This year, the Rowing Club will share half of the net proceeds from the event with Vashon Food Bank, Vashon Youth & Family Services, and the Interfaith Council for the Prevention of Homelessness.
“The Vashon community supports – or at least tolerates — this ride every year, and we appreciate their patience about sharing our roads with so many cyclists for four good causes,” said Zabette Macomber, P2P Co-producer.
The event has extensive COVID safety protocols in place, according to organizers. For more information, visit passport2pain.org.
Find out more about meditation
Thinking about starting or restarting a meditation practice? The Puget Sound Zen Center will present “Zen 101,” a free class, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, on Zoom. Islanders are encouraged to bring questions and friends to the class. Find out more at pszc.org.
Breathe deep at weekend retreat
Robert Litman, an islander who teaches breathing techniques that help control symptoms and reduce medications for conditions including asthma, anxiety, allergies and others, will hold a two-day weekend breathing retreat, with sessions held from 10 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19, on Zoom.
Each session of the retreat will provide breathing education and simple movement skills in focusing awareness, refining intention, increasing your ability to track the dynamics and relationships between breathing, the responses of the body, state of health, emotional and mental well-being, presence, critical awareness and peak performance. Each session will have time for questions and sharing by the group.
Class participation is limited to 12 participants. The participation fee is $100 for the weekend and is payable via PayPal, Venmo, credit card, check or Zelle. To register or determine whether the class is appropriate for you, mail robert@thebreathablebody.com. For more information, www.thebreathablebody.com.
No CiderFest this year
Vashon Chamber of Commerce has canceled this year’s CiderFest 2021, which had been scheduled for Oct. 12, citing increasing impacts of the Delta variant and public health recommendations from Vashon’s Medical Reserve Corps. The event, presented in partnership with Vashon’s Fruit Club, will return in 2022.
