Safety first at Senior Center

Vashon Senior Center now requires all those entering the senior center to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination. Also, a new pedestrian crossing light has been installed on Bank Road in front of the Center — a fix by King County for a dangerous intersection for which many on Vashon have long advocated.

Health Care District Annual Report to Community

The Vashon Health Care District will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, on Zoom. The link to the meeting can be found on the district’s website, vashonhealthcare.org. The purpose of this meeting is to provide an annual report to the community on the Vashon Health Care District’s support for primary care services on Vashon Island, through Sea Mar Community Health Centers.

NAMI Support Group meets Thursday

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Friends and Family Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, on Zoom using the following link: zoom.us/j/442169680. This group meets monthly and is intended to be of help to friends and neighbors who have a loved one in their life with a mental health condition. VARSA releases community survey

VARSA (Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substance Abuse) has released its annual community survey, focusing on perceptions of youth alcohol and substance use, prescription drug use and mental health issues among island youth. Anyone who is older than 18 and lives or works on Vashon is asked to take the survey. The survey is posted at varsanetwork.org/community-survey/ and is available until Dec. 15.

PSE offers assistance to those behind on bills

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) offers financial assistance and payment arrangements to help customers who are behind on their bills. Residential and small commercial customers may now also enroll in extended payment plans that allow up to 18 months to pay past due balances. Reconnection fees, security deposits and late payment fees are waived for 180 days after the end of the moratorium. Fix-It Café is back

The Vashon Fix-It Café will return from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Vashon Eagles Club, 18134 Vashon Highway SW. Advance registration is required — complete the form at vashonfixit.com to be paired with a fixer, or volunteer to join the crew of fixers. You’ll be given a time to drop off your item(s) and will be called when the fix is finished. Zoom consultations, for repairs you can handle at home, are also available.

The list of items that can be fixed includes bicycles, outdoor equipment, lamps, vacuums, fans, chairs, tables, tools, computers, music players, TVs, blenders, toasters, toys, pants, dresses, electronics, and more. Fixing and advice are free, but if parts are needed, islanders may be required to acquire them, at cost, to complete the fix.
