A week of Homecoming festivities at Vashon High School (VHS) was capped under Friday night lights as the school’s gridiron players took on the East Jefferson High School Redhawks on Friday, Oct. 1, in a home game.
Although the Pirates fell 19-0 in the match, spirits were high in the stands as mostly masked students packed the Green Tide section of the bleachers, and student Eben Tracy, inhabiting the Pirate mascot costume, ran the Pirate flag up and down the sidelines.
At halftime, Sam Walker and Lisee Crayton were crowned as Homecoming King and Queen. Cait Jeffcoat, George Murphy, Tshering Sherpa and Katy Kirkpatrick filled out the court of royalty.
According to VHS Principal Danny Rock, the game was a culmination of several homecoming activities planned by the leaders of VHS’s Associated Student Body (ASB) that included an open mic assembly featuring a student magician, a student band, a jazz duet and several soloists.
Also on Friday, an outdoor pep assembly included class competitions in a tug of war, goofy relays and other contests. There was also the retro spectacle of a “Powderpuff” football game on Friday afternoon, in which female-identifying juniors and seniors won the contest against sophomores and freshman students. A tailgate party also took place in the VHS courtyard before the varsity football game.
The ASB is also working with the VHS administration to plan a dance that will take place later this month if conditions permit, Rock said.
