Memorial Day Observance

All are invited to attend a Memorial Day celebration at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Vashon Cemetery. The ceremony will include singing, a color guard, bagpipes, taps and inspiring remarks from veterans as island families come this year to remember men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military.

Health Care District begins in-person meetings

In compliance with changing state open-meetings rules as COVID evolves, the board of commissioners of the Vashon Health Care District on June 1 will resume in-person meetings for the first time in more than two years.

The June 1 meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW. Information about how to attend the meeting remotely will be available on the district’s website, vashonhealthcare.org, before the meeting date. The board has been meeting the first and third Wednesdays of each month, but is considering changing the meeting dates, time and location.

As part of Washington State Ferries’ (WSF) latest step in a multi-year planning process to replace the terminal in West Seattle, the public is encouraged to provide feedback to help balance the needs of ferry riders and the surrounding communities.

Community compost plans discussed

King County’s Solid Waste Division will host a virtual public meeting, to discuss organic waste processing on Vashon, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, on Zoom. Project staff will give an overview of a recent organics processing study, share the results of a community survey, discuss future projects under consideration, and answer questions from the public. Talk on green burial is offered

Return Home will offer an in-person presentation on terramation, also known as human composting, on Wednesday, June 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Island Funeral Home, in partnership with Island Funeral Service and “Let’s talk about Living and Dying.”

Learn to Row Day

Vashon Island Rowing Club’s National Learn to Row Day will take place on Saturday, June 4. This activity, sponsored nationally by USRowing, will be at Jensen Point Boathouse, on the east side of Burton Peninsula. A highlight will be going out for a coached row on Quartermaster Harbor.

Two sessions, for ages 12 and older, are available on June 4, the first from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the second from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The drop-in event is free and no pre-registration is required. For more information, contact Debby Jackson, at 206-463-3729.
