EVENTS
Food Bank tours: Attend tours of the current Vashon Food Bank site on Sunrise Ridge and its future site on Vashon United Methodist Church property at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4. Food Bank Director Emily Scott and board members will lead the tour. The tour can accommodate 10 people. RSVPs are required; email minta@vashonfoodbank.org. Meet at the current food bank at 10030 SW 210th St., behind the Sea Mar Clinic.
WinterFest returns to the town center of Vashon on Saturday, Dec. 6, closing Vashon Highway between 171st Street, near Ober Park, to 178th Street by Vashon Theatre.
Dog barber open house: Sit Stay Dog Barber, a new mobile dog-care service, will hold a “Meet and Treat” open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at 17141 Vashon Hwy SW. The bright blue grooming van, created by C’Mon Barber owner Tara Morgan, will offer baths, brushing and nail trims by appointment, with limited walk-up nail services. Point Robinson open house, an annual event presented by Vashon Park District, will take place from 12-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Point Robinson Lighthouse. Santa will be in Quarters A from 2-4 p.m. that day. Tour the lighthouse and Quarters A and B, hear live music, enjoy savory and sweet treats and find nautical-themed stocking stuffers in the Ship’s Store.
Ryan Krug Cup: The annual Ryan Krug Cup, a spirited match that raises money for the Ryan Krug Scholarship Fund, will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, rain or shine, at Vashon High School. Warm-up for the game is at 12 p.m. The event honors the late Ryan Belknap Krug, son of Rich and Rose Krug, who tragically died in a car accident in 2013. The Cup pits the men’s team, made up of adults who make the top 18 donations to the fund, against the oldest Vashon Island Soccer club team for the trophy. Additional donations can be made at vashonscholarships.org — write “Krug Cup” in the memo.
Inclusion Island will host its annual holiday party for people with developmental disabilities and their families at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Vashon Lutheran Church, at 18623 Vashon Hwy SW. Questions? Email hersheyhousing@gmail.com.
End of life conversations: Two free sessions of “Traveling With Grief Through the Winter Months,” facilitated by island therapist Kenny Alton, will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 and 18, at Women Hold the Key, 9822 SW Gorsuch Rd. The series, funded by Judith Neary and RJ’s Kids, is open to all genders. Sessions will focus on both sharing and witnessing grief, with Alton leading participants through questions including, “How can we be present in the world with grief?” Registration is requested, but drop-ins are welcome. Santa’s Cottage will be open for visitors and photographs from 12-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Dec. 13-14, in the cottage located behind in the Village Green.
DSHS mobile van visit: With some Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) program rules changing in 2026, residents are encouraged to review their accounts and ensure information is up to date. The DSHS mobile van will visit the Vashon Food Bank from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, to assist with paperwork, benefit applications and questions.
Free community dinners: Free community dinners are served Mondays through Fridays from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at Vashon Presbyterian Church, 17708 Vashon Hwy SW, hosted by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness.
VASHON LIBRARY
WinterFest story time: Kick off the holiday season with songs and stories from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. After story time, kids can make a jingle bell craft and grab hot cocoa to take to the WinterFest parade. All ages welcome with an adult.
Spanish story time: Enjoy stories, music and movement in Spanish from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Dec. 8. The program supports early literacy, with a play session to follow. Registration not required.
Fiber arts meetup: Bring your knitting, crochet, needlepoint or other fiber arts projects to the Vashon Fiber Arts Meetup from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. All skill levels welcome.
Teen Hangout: Teens in grades 6–12 can drop in for crafts, games and Nintendo Switch play most Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the library. Snacks provided.
SENIOR CENTER
Enjoy a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the following activities throughout the week at the Vashon Senior Center, 10004 SW Bank Road, unless noted otherwise.
How to Library: Learn how to use the King County Library System catalog at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Vashon Library. Hosted by Sam Harris in partnership with the Senior Center, this monthly session meets on the first Thursday.
ZooLights at Point Defiance Park: Join a trip to ZooLights at Point Defiance Zoo on Thursday, Dec. 4. Meet at the Senior Center at 3 p.m. to catch the Tahlequah ferry. Cost is $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers. Call the Center to reserve a spot.
“Elder Law” talk: Christopher M. Henderson of Brothers Henderson Durkin, P.S. will speak on powers of attorney and health care directives at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Senior Center. A Q&A will follow.
Wacky Wednesday: Join Sam Harris from the Vashon Library for craft projects and festive fun at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Senior Center. Free, with all supplies provided.
Death Cafe: The Death Cafe meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Senior Center’s side room. The informal gathering offers conversation about death and living fully. Questions? Call Susan at 206-818-4232 or Joe at 206-919-1275.
GRANNY’S ATTIC
Holiday fun Fridays: Granny’s Attic will host three Holiday Fun Fridays in December, each from noon to 5 p.m.: pajama day on Dec. 5 (wear pajamas and Granny’s pays your sales tax), hat day on Dec. 12 (special items, free gifts and giveaways) and ugly sweater day on Dec. 19 (sales and specials throughout the store).
Early closure: Granny’s will close early at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, for an employee holiday party and the WinterFest parade.
Gift card Saturday: On Saturday, Dec. 13, from noon to 5 p.m., receive a free $10 gift card with every $50 gift card purchase.
Last-minute shopping: Shop the final day of the season from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23. Wear something sparkly or fancy for 10% off. Granny’s Attic will then close until Saturday, Jan. 3.
MEETINGS
VIGA annual meeting: The Vashon Island Growers Association will hold its annual meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Vashon Grange (soon to be Heights Grocery). Members and community members are invited to review the year’s accomplishments, share feedback and discuss future plans. Soup will be served.
Garden Club holiday potluck: The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Bethel Church gym. The meeting will include club business, a screening of this year’s Community Garden Award winners video and a holiday potluck — attendees are invited to bring a dish to share.
Vashon-Maury Community Council: The council will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 this month. Find out more at v-mcc.org.
Water District 19: Usually holds regular board meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at the district’s board room at 17630 100th Ave SW. Visit water19.com.
