Lillian Anna Wendland Schaal

Lillian Anna Wendland Schaal died May 24, 2006, at 98½ years old. She was born in Seattle Jan. 10, 1908, to Seattle pioneers Anna Victoria and Otto Leopold Wendland.
A lifetime resident of Washington state, she made homes in West Seattle, Bellevue and Cashmere.
Mrs. Schaal graduated from Ballard High School in 1926. She worked for Frederick and Nelson and Rhodes department stores, playing basketball for Rhodes. She was a teacher at Seattle Day Nursery.
Staying busy, she learned to drive at 70 years of age and painted oil paintings of the many mountains she loved.
She took many first prize ribbons for her canned goods and “Gold Apple” first prize for her winning apple pie at the Wenatchee State Fair.
She lived in Cashmere until she was 92 years old, where she fished the rivers and lakes. Her family started the Cashmere Valley Bank.
Her family says she was a devoted, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and leaves behind a legacy of strength and service to her family, friends and the Lord.
They say her artistic sensitivity and determination created many loving hearts and friendly memories.
Mrs. Schaal was also a lifelong, active and committed member of the Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Schaal was the mother of Judith Manerud Lawrence of Vashon Island, where Lillian was a resident for the past three years.
Her son Gerald Manerud, daughter Janet Elaine Noffsinge, granddaughter Jennifer Nell Lawrence, and husband Max Schaal all died earlier.
Survivors include her daughter Judith, grandchildren Noel Manerud, Lacy Lawrence Elins, Richard Ryan Lawrence, Brad Noffsinger and Celiste Noffsinger, as well as great grandchildren Janet and Jennifer Noffsinger, Owen and Zoe Manerud, and nieces Carol Lemonds Dewell, Joan Lemonds Roush, Marilyn Kavanaugh and Marsha Shin, and nephew Steve Lemonds.
Mrs. Schaal died peacefully, the last of her 10 siblings.
A memorial will be held in the gardens of the Betty McDonald Farm on Vashon Island.
