An excessive heat warning will be in effect until 9 p.m. Friday, with widespread record highs expected on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts highs in the 90s to near 105 on Thursday, with Friday just a bit cooler.
Heat illnesses are possible with temperatures this hot, according to the NWS. People engaged in outdoor activities should have access to plenty of beverages, as well as places to get out of the direct sunlight.
On Vashon, Vashon Island Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Bob Larsen reminded people to hydrate and cool off.
He also cautioned about fire danger.
“We have been very dry for a long time. It won’t take anything to spark a fire,” he said.
Meanwhile, King County Sheriff’s Office deputy Kurt Lysen urged pet owners not to leave their dogs in vehicles, even if it feels comfortable outside. He said that last Saturday, he rescued a dog from a car in town that was more than 100 degrees inside, even though it was only 70 degrees outside. He reported the dog was doing fine on Monday.
It is illegal to leave an animal in a hot car, and in the state of Washington, police officers reserve the right to break into vehicles to rescue pets. Those who see a animal in distress should call 911.
Pet owners should also be aware of the heat of pavement and sidewalks on pets’ paws and take proper precautions (paw protecting cream, paw boots) when on those surfaces.
