International chess champion Phiona Mutesi was on Vashon on Saturday, where she simultaneously played 21 players of all ages at the Vashon Library. The results: She won 19 games, drew one — playing islander Charlie Kipp — and lost one to Robert Leung.

It was a standing-room-only crowd to hear her speak, when she shared stories of her life, from growing up in Katwe, a slum in Kampala, Uganda, to the present. She is now a college student at Northwest University in Kirkland. She was invited to Vashon by islander Philip McReady and the PTSA Chess Club.
