(Dana Schuerholz Photo) Islander Mei Churchill was part of a group that gathered at the North End ferry dock on Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor treaties, salmon, orca and Snake River restoration.

A group of 12 children and their parents from the Vashon Green School showed up at the Vashon Ferry Dock with hand-painted signs in support of honoring treaties, salmon, orcas and Snake River restoration as part of an Indigenous Peoples’ Day action on Monday, Oct. 11.

The action was part of a larger Pacific Northwest event in six cities and towns, organized by Vashon’s Backbone Campaign, which provided banners across the region, including one on Vashon. Across the Pacific Northwest, people held signs and banners, encouraging our elected leaders to “Stand with Tribes – Save Orca and Salmon – Breach Lower Snake River dams.”

The action is part of an ongoing campaign to restore the Snake River, in solidarity with tribes, including the Nez Perce Nimiipuu who have called for breaching of the four dams on the Lower Snake River.
