Juneteenth on Vashon
In commemoration of Juneteenth, the Vashon Juneteenth Committee and Mukai Farm & Garden will present an event that will be both educational and in the spirit of a jubilee. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the grounds of Mukai Farm & Garden, and will be a family-friendly day of recognition and celebration of the contributions of Black Americans and culture. The event will feature a presentation of the importance of federal reparations for the American descendants of slavery. There will be live music performances by Vashon’s John Browne and Tacoma’s Kim Archer. Local chefs, including Chantel Jackson of Thyme Well Spent, Michaella Olivarri of Mica’s Kitchen, and Dre Neely, of Gravy, will prepare food for purchase.
Juneteenth celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, which is commonly known as the end of slavery in America when General Order No. 3, by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas. This announcement came almost a year and a half after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, officially Proclamation 95, on January 1, 1863.

ECEAP Preschool is Enrolling
ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program), a free, state-funded program that provides high quality childcare/preschool for families and children who qualify due to income and other factors, is now enrolling for the 2022-2023 school year.
ECEAP includes preschool education, health services coordination, and family support services. Students build the beginning skills for reading, math and science in a play-based and loving community. Two nutritious meals and a snack are provided every day. The program also works closely with parents to support their children’s health and education and helps families access medical and dental care and social services. Classroom communication is in Spanish and English.
Because the program is at Chautauqua Elementary School, ECEAP participants feel a sense of belonging and connection to the school community and move easily into kindergarten. The school takes place from 9:05 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. Monday through Thursday. To find out more and enroll, children ages 3 to 5 (with a three-year-old birthday by Aug. 31).
