Stay cool, Vashon

There is help for those affected by Vashon’s current heat wave — VashonBePrepared has opened two cooling centers, at Vashon Library and Vashon Center for the Arts, for those who need relief from the high temperatures.

To find out the daily hours of the cooling centers, set at press time to be open through Friday, sign up for email alerts at tinyurl.com/ycy2smrh.

Seniors, young children, those who are unhoused, people with chronic health conditions or mental illness, athletes who exercise outdoors, outdoor workers, and people who take medications that increase sensitivity to the heat are at particular risk in current weather conditions.

Everyone should drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, check up on relatives and neighbors, and if possible, seek spaces with air conditioning.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Pickleball, anyone?

Vashon People for Pickleball will host a public meeting, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Vashon Athletic Club, to gather input for developing public pickleball courts on the island.

The group may also form a pickleball club. For more information contact Claire Denise at 206-465-5832 or Marilyn Owen at 406-633-1131.

NAMI Support Group meets

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Friends and Family Support Group will hold a hybrid meeting, in person at the Vashon Presbyterian Church, located at 17708 Vashon Highway SW, and also via the Zoom link zoom.us/j/442169680, at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 4. This group meets monthly and is intended to be of help to our friends and neighbors who have a loved one in their life with a mental health condition. For further information, contact 425-221-1142 or pastorleigh@comcast.net.

Win shopping spree

Islanders can still purchase raffle tickets for a three-minute shopping spree at Vashon Thriftway — one of Voice of Vashon’s (VOV) biggest fundraisers of the year. The winning raffle ticket and four other second prizes of $50, will be drawn on Friday, Aug. 5 at 5:45 p.m.

Tickets are $20 each or five for $80, and can be purchased from KVSH show hosts, VoV board members and VoV volunteers at Thriftway. For more information about the shopping spree, visit voiceofvashon.org/spree.

Don’t forget to vote

Voters should have by now received their mail-in ballots for the 2022 Primary Election, but if not, are instructed to call King County Elections at 206-296-VOTE (8683).

Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, Aug. 2, or returned to one of the 76 drop box locations in King County.

Drop boxes are open until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
