There are eight spots left for this walk.

Suzanne Romain will lead bird watching at the All Ages Trail near upper Shinglemill, at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 15. The path is suitable for walkers, wheelchairs, and strollers. The walk will be short, with lots of stops at benches. Register by all walks by emailing sylvia@sylvansanctuary.com.

Juneteenth Celebration

June 19, 1865, is commonly known as the end of slavery in America, when the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas. This announcement came almost a year and a half after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, officially Proclamation 95, on January 1, 1863.

In commemoration of Juneteenth, the Vashon Juneteenth Committee and Mukai Farm & Garden will hold an event that is both educational and in the spirit of a jubilee, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Mukai Farm & Garden. All are welcome to this family-friendly day of recognition and celebration of the contributions of Black Americans and culture.

There will be live music performances by Tacoma’s Kim Archer. The event will also feature a presentation of Black History on Vashon Island.

Bring styrofoam and plastic waste to the next First (& Third) Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, 10-2 at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW. See a list of “What we Accept” at zerowastevashon.org and email nadine@nadineedelstein.com with any questions. Please note: the event no longer accepts plastic waste if it is contained in a black plastic bag.

4-H Horse Show back

Vashon Rock Riders 4-H Horse Show will take place starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at Paradise Ridge Equestrian Park. It’s the first time the local 4-H horse club has put on a show since before the pandemic and will include young riders as well as adult riders, who will be judged in various performance classes. Lunch concessions at the horse show will be provided by organizers from Guide Dogs for the Blind, of Vashon.

The Vashon Rock Riders are a 4-H club located on Vashon, under the direction of Joe Cunningham from Bay Breeze Farm. 4-H has been around since 1902 and is America’s largest youth development program. The Vashon Rock Riders are a group of 11 kids ranging between the ages of 8-16. They ride horses several times each week and learn about the care of horses. Club members conduct business meetings twice a month, give presentations and design informational posters about animal care, serve the community through various projects, and participate in other leadership development opportunities.
