When the collaborative gallery Barnworks shuttered its doors at the end of 2012, it left a significant hole in the Vashon art scene. For over 30 years the barn situated in the field behind Sharon Munger’s house held biannual art shows, retreats, weddings and parties and became the site for sewing the annual Vashon Allied Arts community quilt. Yet while the venue may be gone, the spirit behind the artist collective remains. The group will hold a reunion show at The Hardware Store Restaurant, opening on Friday, Aug. 1, during the First Friday Gallery Cruise
Responding to a call for making a “cool” island T-shirt and with the aim of visually capturing what they call the quirks Vashon, two island artists — Ellen Parker and Megan Minier of Cowbelle Industries — launched a series of Vashon T-shirts last year at Strawberry Festival. The duo plan to return to a vendor booth this weekend to sell the distinctly Vashon T-shirts at Strawberry Festival.
Let a group of island comics and a Seattle headliner tickle your funny bone during Comedy Night, beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Red Bike.
For island artist Wendra-Lynne, coffee is much more than a caffeinated drink. It is a sensory experience with an intoxicating aroma and comforting warmth. It is the heart of an industry that connects different communities and ties global cultures together. It is also a medium she sometimes uses for painting. Works of art from her series “Paintings Done in Coffee about Coffee” will be on display for a week at Café Luna.

When Jean Ameluxen first started writing stories about Billy Nelson, she wasn’t planning on writing a book. She just liked the character, her chosen time frame of World War II and the setting — Vashon Island. When a writer friend explained that a novel is just one short story followed by another using the same characters, Ameluxen began her novel in earnest.
Three Vashon writers gathered last week to talk about their different writing styles and experiences as contributors to the literary anthology “Shared Histories, Stories of Courage, Risk, and Revelation.” The authors — Catherine Johnson, John Runyan and Elizabeth Van Deventer — will read from the collection at 6 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Bookshop.
Island musician Cami Lundeen and her husband Erik are preparing for a journey of a lifetime. They’ve sold all their worldly goods, bought a small pop-up trailer and this weekend will hit the highway with their four young children to launch Cami’s nationwide tour.
When island artist Pascale Judet invited her son Gabriel Judet-Weinshel to share a show at VALISE Gallery this month, his response surprised her. Instead of two separate exhibits, the New York City filmmaker and musician suggested he and his mother talk about their deep-seated link as artists. Their joint show, “A Lifelong Dialogue,” opens Friday at VALISE.
Sharing the Stage will kick off the eighth show in the series on Friday, when four student groups will open a concert by Brothers From Another (BFA), a Seattle hip-hop group.
Another Greek myth rolls into the Vashon High School theater, this time in the form of the pop-rock roller-disco musical “Xanadu.” For the next two weekends, VHS students will don roller skates to give this Broadway hit some amusing wheels.
