Last Thursday the Vashon Pirates kicked off the cross country season at a fun and informal jamboree meet in Bellevue.
Four Vashon athletes qualified to compete at the Tri-District track and field competition, held Thursday and Saturday at King’s High School in Shoreline. Islander Emma Levant moved on to the state competition.
After a week off for Spring Break, members of the Vashon track and field team did not miss a step as they hit their stride and enjoyed a fair amount of success at a meet at Orting on Thursday.
Three Pirate girls claimed first-place victories at last Thursday’s track and field meet at Charles Wright, helping the girls team take second overall among five teams at the meet.
The Vashon High School track and field team competed in its first meet of the season on Thursday at Orting High School. At times it seemed as if flippers and snorkel gear should have been issued to each athlete, as heavy rainfall and gusty winds played a part in many of the running, jumping and throwing events at the meet.
The Vashon High School cross county team ended its season on Nov. 19 with an awards banquet at Bethel Church. Individual athletes were recognized, and the team as a whole won some additional honors.
Sophomore runner Maddi Groen qualified for the state cross country meet when she placed 26th at the Tri-district tournament, also known as the Westside Classic, on Saturday.
On Thursday, Oct. 20, the Nisqually League cross country tournament took place at Fort Steilacoom.
Anyone waiting to catch an early evening ferry at Point Defiance last Thursday had the opportunity to see the start and finish of the Pirates’ cross country meet, where the girls team took a close second behind Seattle Christian. Vashon went up against both Seattle Christian and Life Christian at a double-loop course beginning in the open grass area just across the street in Point Defiance Park.
Last Thursday the Vashon cross country team parked its bus and walked onto the ferry, headed to a meet at Lincoln Park, right by the Fauntleroy ferry dock.
Last Thursday the Vashon Pirates cross country team hosted the Life Christian Eagles and the Orting Cardinals at a meet on Vashon’s 5K course, which finishes at the high school stadium.
The Vashon Pirate cross country team is off and running. Normally this fall sport involves running through leaves on damp, cool days. However, this was not the case on Thursday, Sept. 8, at Fort Steilacoom, where summer was in full force at 86 degrees at race time.
Vashon High School senior Colin Andrus qualified to compete at the state 1A track and field championships, which will take place this weekend.
