The smell of the sea, the cries of gulls and the sounds of crashing waves; there are many reasons Vashon Islanders might choose to live by the water, such as in this photo taken near Portage, but low-cost property usually isn’t one of them. Taxes on non-waterfront homeowner’s bills will be about 1.5% down from last year. However, folks whose houses are on the waterfront (about a quarter of Vashon’s houses) will see their bills go up more than 5%, on average.
