Homecoming at VHS, Vashon Health Fair, “The National Parks” screening, styrofoam and plastics recycling, Brown Briefly highlights healthcare.

Homecoming at VHS

Vashon High School (VHS) students, staff, alumni and islanders will celebrate Homecoming this weekend, with ceremonies and a football game in the VHS stadium at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. The Pirate football team, led by head coach Manu Samanna-Spagnoli and now standing at five wins and only one loss for the season, will take the field against Cascade Christian under the Friday night lights. Fans can enjoy the view from the grandstand, newly refurbished and painted under the direction of VISD Facilities Director Kevin Dickerson. Go Pirates!

Vashon Health Fair

Vashon Health Fair, presented by King County Public Health and Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) will take place from 10 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Vashon United Methodist Church.

The event includes free healthcare screenings, including ones for blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, diabetes, acupuncture and free COVID-19 vaccines. There will also be developmental check-ins for infants and children ages 0 to 5, and limited distribution of free bike helmets, first aid kits, and medicine lock boxes. At the same event, islanders can apply for health insurance and ORCA Lift reduced bus and water taxi fare cards.

Everything is free, with bilingual staffing. Spanish speakers are encouraged to attend.

The health fair is walk-in only, with no appointments.

‘The National Parks’ screening

Vashon Park District will present Episode 5 of the Ken Burns documentary, “The National Parks – America’s Best Idea,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Vashon Theatre. The episode, “Great Nature 1933-1945, covers Franklin D. Roosevelt’s creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps, opening a “golden age” of renovation projects in the parks.

This free series, presented by Vashon Park District, screens a new episode each Thursday. Episode 4, “Going Home 1920-1933,” will screen at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.

Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling

Islanders can now recycle styrofoam and plastics twice a month, at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave. SW. The next recycling event will take place from 10 to 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Sheffield Buiding. For more information, visit zerowastevashon.org or email nadine@nadineedelstein.com.

Brown Briefly highlights healthcare

Representatives of the Vashon Island Healthcare District will join hosts Bruce Haulman, Kevin Jones, Truman O’Brien and Craig Beles on Voice of Vashon’s (VOV) Brown Briefly show at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at KVSH 101.9 FM, or via voiceofvashon.org.

Representatives of Sea Mar Community Health Center have also accepted an invitation to be on the show on Tuesday, Nov. 8. These guests will include Mary Bartolo, executive vice president, Mike Leong, vice president of corporate and legal affairs, and Jesus Sanchez, senior vice president of opperations for Sea Mar’s northern region.
