This month slam poetry is the focus of this monthly (first Wednesdays) get-together of folks who love to talk about poetry. The gathering will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Vashon Bookshop.

Interested people are invited to bring what they know, what they’ve read or what they’ve heard about slam poetry.

Rumor has it that there will be at least one representative from the performance poetry community. Or people can bring a poem they love or wrote or anything to talk about that has to do with poetry or poets.

Newcomers and drop-ins are always welcome, and being late or leaving early is never a problem.

‘Empty bowls’ benefit

The Vashon High School Interact/Amnesty International Club will host an “Empty Bowls” benefit dinner for the Vashon food bank at 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Vashon Cohousing Common House.

The evening will include a soup dinner, open-mic entertainment and an auction for unique ceramic bowls created by Island artists and students.

The dinner is free if people bring their own bowls to eat out of, but those who would like a bowl for the evening should bring a $2 donation.

Both monetary and canned food donations for the food bank will also be collected at the event.

Hecht tells stories

Island storyteller Merna Hecht will bring May Magic and Tales of Wonder to the Vashon Bookshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, for people of all ages.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday at Pandora’s Box.

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the Village Green. Farmers sell Vashon grown plant starts, trees and perennials, as well as meat, milk, eggs, wine, cheese and some early spring produce.

Island crafters display and sell Island-made artwork, children’s clothing and toys, jewelry, soaps, essential oils, specialty chocolates, cutting boards, incense and cards. Others sharpen knives and give massages.

Three choirs sing

The Vashon Allied Arts’s youth and teen choruses will join Vashon Voices for concerts at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 14736 S.W. Bethel Lane.

The theme of the concert will be peace, love and harmony.

Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for general admission and $8 for Vashon Allied Arts members, seniors and students.

Land trust tours

The land trust will host spring tours at various times Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11.

Take Mom on a lovely walk for Mother’s Day. These tours are good for all ages. The featured preserves are Marjorie Stanley Forest Trail walk, Ellis Creek Estuary at Tramp Harbor and Piner Point Beach walk.

This is the first time the land trust is offering tours of these shoreline areas. Details are available at www.vashonlandtrust.org.

‘Rhyme Time’

The Vashon Library will host “Rhyme Time!” presented by Recess Monkey at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17.

Three teachers from Seattle have formed a rock band for kids. They will weave puns, jokes, stories and shenanigans into a show with catchy, singable and danceable ditties.

The show is for kids ages 3 and older. Registration is required; call the library at 463-2069.

Northwest windstorms

Vashon Audubon will welcome University of Washington atmospheric scientist Cliff Mass at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22. His topic will be “The Great Windstorms of the Pacific Northwest.”

The event will be at the Land Trust Building located at 10014 S.W. Bank Rd. The event is free, and all are welcome.

Drama Dock auditions

Drama Dock will host auditions from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, for the “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. Callbacks will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 25. All auditions will be in the multipurpose room at McMurray Middle School.

There are roles for four women and five men — late teens to seniors.

Those trying out should plan to attend one of the audition times from beginning to end. Prepared monologues are welcomed. Scripts are available for reading at the Vashon Library information desk.

Performances will be July 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27. Elizabeth Ripley will direct.
