Claire Hallowell

Claire was born on January 24, 1934, and her family moved often because her father was an officer in the Army. She attended boarding school for a few years, and ultimately graduated in 1952 from Roosevelt High School, Des Moines, Iowa.

Claire obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Washington in 1956. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.

Claire married Robert Hallowell on June 13, 1958, and they have two daughters, Jill and Jeannette. Claire worked for an Investment Company before she had daughters and later as a dental assistant. Claire was a Blue Bird Leader and supported the girls’ baseball team and their skiing. She was a bowler, skier, and a world traveler.

When their daughters were young they spent summers on Vashon at Tahlequah and the community was alive with sport activities, parades, games and potluck. In retirement Claire and Bob’s residence is on Corbin Beach which has been in the family for seventy seven years.

Claire excelled as an active and dedicated volunteer. She arranged meals for those in need and greeted visitors at the Vashon Methodist Church. She coordinated the Lunch Bunch Group and recruited volunteers to help those in need.

For many years Claire was the welcoming face on Wednesday mornings when she was the volunteer receptionist at the Vashon Senior Center. She had a way of making anyone she encountered feel valued, seen and heard. She touched so many lives and her constant positive attitude was an inspiration. Claire was honored as the Volunteer of the Year 2016 – a small token of appreciation and recognition that can never match how much she contributed to the betterment of the lives in her orbit.

Choir was a lifelong joy of her life – as a youth, through college, thirty years with the Edmonds Methodist Church and 25 years with the Vashon Methodist Church. She toured England with a Choir from Edmonds, Washington. She lost her soprano voice due to an infection but carried on as an Alto for nineteen years.

Claire was a warm, caring person who drew others close. She shared her joy and gave support and encouragement to others. We are all honored to have been in her presence.
