Fred ‘Wilfred’ Joseph Echeandia died Sept. 14, 2005, due to complications after a long illness.

Friends and family say he will be remembered for his graciousness, generosity, intelligence, courage and his sense of humor.

Fluent in three languages, he was educated in the U.S., Spain, Italy and traveled widely. As a noted educator he successfully directed a Montessori School in Eugene, Ore. for 16 years while managing two other businesses.

On Vashon Island he was active in the arts community and known for his dedication to EarthFair. Before he died he had a party as a celebration of his life rather than a funeral.

Survivors include his son Christopher, mother Esther of Vineland, N.J., brother Cecil Chianti and numerous relatives.

Donations in his memory can be sent to EarthFair or the Northwest Kidney Center.
