LETTER | Pedestrians need to take precautions at night

Published 12:05 pm Wednesday, December 9, 2015

I am writing to urge my Vashon neighbors who choose to walk, jog or bike when it is dark to please, please, please wear reflective clothing.

Last week, I drove to and from my grandson’s day care on Cove Road in the late afternoon. On the way there, a jogger startled me by crossing the road in front of me. A slight movement was the only reason I knew the jogger was there; otherwise, the individual was invisible.

On the way back, I was surprised by a man walking a dog right next to the road because there was little- to-no shoulder. Again, I was right on top of them before I realized they were there. This caused me to swerve abruptly, which could have been a problem if there had been oncoming traffic.

When you are outdoors in dark clothing at night, you are nearly impossible to see. Buy a reflective vest and wear it. It would be a terrible tragedy if an accident occurred when the solution is so simple.
