Schools need support of community to continue unique programs

What a glorious spring we’re having. I’ll bet you’ve seen tons of kids out and about, reveling in nature on our beautiful island. You’d be amazed by how much these kids know about their natural environment. A lot of that knowledge comes from their own adventuring, but think how much more children understand and appreciate the natural world when those outdoor adventures are paired with science classes at school.
That is the exciting two-fold approach that’s happening at Chautauqua. Thanks to support from the Vashon Schools Foundation, we now have a partnership with the Vashon Nature Center and a dedicated science specialist teaching hands-on science.
The state and federal government don’t fund core programs and curricula, such as this science program, that are critical to educating our students. Because of the generosity of Vashon, however, Chautauqua students have the opportunity to thrive in a rich learning environment.
I know a bit about this learning environment because I’ve spent the past 23 years teaching at Chautauqua. I’ve watched government funding diminish — and I’ve seen our community step up to fill in the gaps. My classroom has benefitted from all kinds of volunteers who have given their time and energy because they believe in our children. And through the community’s support of organizations like the Vashon Schools Foundation, important, creative, enriching programs have been put into place to help our teachers and students. I urge you to support the foundation in its campaign this year.
This is the last month before my retirement. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to teach on this beautiful island, in this generous community, where we nurture our children to be confident, responsible citizens of the world. I’ve learned so much from my students and from all of you. Thank you for supporting our schools and the next generation of Vashon kids who are going to change the world.
