The McMurray Middle School Mustangs wrestling team participated in the 2019 West Sound Middle School League Championships on Friday and Saturday, finishing in a tie for third place.
McMurray Middle School competes with 13 teams in the West Sound League, several of which have near double the enrollment. Thirteen Vashon wrestlers participated in the varsity tournament; three wrestlers participated in the JV tournament. Many wrestlers advanced deep into the two-day tournament, six placing in the top four, and three of those taking first place. McMurray had the most champions of any team at the tournament.
The McMurray Varsity wrestlers placing were Chase Bradrick and Ferdinand Escovedo in fourth place, Jonah Hendon in third place, and Arda Demir, Glenn Thomas and Colin McIntyre in first place. Thomas finished the tournament with two pins and a 16-9 win in the finals. Demir and McIntyre finished the tournament by pinning all opponents.
The McMurray junior varsity wrestlers all placed in the top three: Tiegin Monson in third, Laith Jorg in second and Dieago Shaw in first.
Only one of the varsity placers will be moving on to the high school next year, so the team will be looking for its second title.
It was a great effort by the entire team. We lost some very close matches, but our guys fought to the end. The coaches are all super proud.
