Movie under the stars and on the big screen

Vashon’s Night Light Drive-In, a partnership between Vashon Theatre and Open Space for Arts & Community, will re-open on the Great Lawn of Open Space on Friday, May 27 with a 30th-anniversary screening of “Hook,” starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. Screenings, at 9:15 p.m., will take place May 28, 29 and 30. Vashon Theatre is also open for business, with “The Courier” playing May 20 to 24, and “A Quiet Place Part II” coming to the big screen from May 27 to June 10. Tickets and concessions for both the drive-in and the movie theatre shows must be purchased in advance at vashontheatre.com.

TALK on the Rock features endurance athlete

Endurance athlete Martin Criminale will deliver a Talk on the Rock at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Admission is $10, tickets can be purchased at vashoncenterforthearts.org. Criminale has devoted his life to extreme endurance sports, including the cycling disciplines of road, track, mountain bike and cyclocross. Now, he identifies as a runner, gravitating to longer “ultra” events. Find out what makes him click and how he stays fit at his talk.

Patterson Hood adds a special second show

Prolific songwriter and Americana/rock music icon Patterson Hood will perform two concerts at Vashon Center for the Arts, the first at 7 p.m. Friday, May 28 and the second at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 29. The first show, already sold out, will seat 70 people, the second will seat 150 people who can provide a photo ID and proof, upon entry, that they received their second shot of vaccine by May 15. Protocols for the second show, developed in consultation with VashonBePrepared and Vashon Medical Reserve Corps after new guidelines were announced by the CDC and Gov. Hood is best known as front-man, singer, songwriter and guitar player for the critically acclaimed rock and roll band Drive-By Truckers, but is also a writer of essays, columns and short stories, as well as a solo performer and producer.

In recent years, he has written an op-ed on the ongoing controversies surrounding the confederate flag for The New York Times Magazine, a piece on Vic Chesnutt for The Oxford American’s annual music issue, and retrospectives on David Bowie for American Songwriter and Merle Haggard for NPR. In October of 2016, Patterson published his first short story featured in “The Highway Kind,” a car-themed crime fiction anthology.

Drive-By Truckers have released 13 studio albums and played over 2,500 shows in the past 25 years. Hood, raised in the Muscle Shoals, Alabama area, has released three solo albums and co-produced or played on additional albums by Jerry Joseph, Bettye LaVette, Booker T. Jones and The Dexateens.

Garden Tour is back

Vashon Center for the Arts’ 30th annual Garden Tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6, at five idyllic spots around the island. The tour is currently sold out; check for updates at vashoncenterforthearts.org. Also, don’t forget to bid on VCA’s related Adirondack Art Auction — chairs painted by local artists are now on display at VCA and online at vashoncenterforthearts.org. Bidding opens on May 21 and closes at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 6.
