First Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling
After a record-breaking collection last month, Zero Waste Vashon’s First Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling event will again take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW. Consider consolidating with your neighbors to keep the line short. The group’s downloadable list of “What We Accept” can be found at ZeroWasteVashon.org and Vashon Styrofoam Recycling Facebook Page. Auction to benefit Vashon Wilderness Program
“Heartwood,” a 10-day online silent auction to benefit Vashon Wilderness Program (VWP), will take place from March 11 to 21, at auctria.events/VWP.
VWP, a nonprofit organization, provides transformative nature immersion programs for people of all ages from Vashon and surrounding Salish Sea communities. More than 5,000 people of all ages have engaged in VWP’s programs since the nonprofit’s inception in 2007.
The auction — featuring items from dozens of island donors — aims to raise $30,000 to further the nonprofit’s justice, equity and accessibility initiatives, including its scholarship program and new initiatives created in partnership with Vashon’s public schools.
For more information on VWP, visit vashonwilderness.org.
Free Audubon events for Vashon bird enthusiasts
Adria Magrath will lead a bird walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12. No registration necessary — interested islanders should just meet at the Park and Ride next to the Country Store on Vashon Hwy. at that time. Attendees are advised to bring binoculars — the birds are building nests and hiding!
Later in March, ecologist Jim Evans will offer a two-part course, “Riparian Systems of Vashon Island,” detailing the biologically rich areas along rivers and streams that transition between aquatic environments and surrounding uplands. These areas, according to Evans, are places of beauty, wonder, and discovery. Islanders will learn in this course how to better protect and restore them for the benefit of birds, mammals, fish, insects, and humans.
The first session will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, on Zoom. The second session will be a socially -distanced field trip from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Saturday, March 26. Register in advance by contacting Sylvia Soholt at sylvia@sylvansancutary.com.
This workshop is co-sponsored by Audubon and the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust.
