From Haiti with Love

An acclaimed Haitian band, Lakou Mizik, will play at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at Open Space for Arts & Community.

The band’s albums have included their debut, “Wa Di Yo,” recorded at the Artists Institute of Haiti, and “HaitiaNola,” an album made with some of New Orleans’s top stars. Their newest album, “Leave the Bones,” has garnered praise from critics including National Public Radio’s Bruce Warren, who said, “… through Vodou chants, Rara dance tunes and contemporary protest songs, the album is a mesmerizing, haunting and uplifting journey into the heart of Haitian culture.”

Stand-up comedy at Vashon Theatre

Celebrate April Fool’s Day at Vashon Theatre with live stand-up comedy from past Seattle International Comedy Competition comics Mo Mandel, Scott Losse and Greg Beachler.Featured comic Mo Mandel has previously been featured on CBS’ “2 Broke Girls” and Comedy Central’s sitcom “Corporate.” Mandel has recently released his first hour-long special “Negative Reinforcement,” on Amazon Prime Video.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1.

Art History Talk

“Special Reservations: Elizabeth Catlett,” will be the subject of an art history talk by Rebecca Albiani, at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, at VCA.

A Black American printmaker and sculptor, Catlett spend decades creating socially conscious art. Her images of working-class women afford heroic status to the dispossed.

Michael Meade hosts free event

Michael Meade, a renowned mythologist, author and speaker, will present a free online event, “Coping in a World Gone Wrong,” aimed at communicating how being soulfully present in our lives settles the psyche and helps us cope with a troubled, unsettled world. The event will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 7, online.

Michael Meade, an islander, is the founder and director of the nonprofit Mosaic Multicultural Foundation and creator of the “Living Myth” podcast.

Vashon Island Chorale is back

Vashon Island Chorale will perform again, at last, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

The concert repertoire consists of two works by local area women composers: “And, All Shall Be Well” by Giselle Wyers, plus “Vashon Suite: No Bridges” by Bronwyn Edwards. The Vashon Island Chorale, under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Gary D. Cannon, is thrilled to make its first appearance in the Kay White Hall since December 2019 singing these two beloved commissioned works.

Artistic Director Dr. Gary D. Cannon will offer a pre-concert lecture 30 minutes before each concert. On Saturday, composer Bron Edwards will be present to speak about her piece, “Vashon Suite: No Bridges.” On Sunday afternoon, composer Giselle Wyers will join Maestro Cannon to talk about “And, All Shall be Well”.
