• EVENTS •

Workshop: A free workshop, “Lay Your Burden Down,” will take place from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at a location to be provided upon pre-registration at vashondoveproject.org/events. Facilitated by Carina A. del Rosario, the workshop will result in a textile artwork created that celebrates the release of hard memories and trauma. The workshop is part of a larger series of events, “Sanctuary: At Home in the Body.” Find out more at kintsugisomaticart.com.

Kizoku Ishiki Obon: This celebration of belonging will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, at Vashon Cemetery. It is a free cultural event that will include dance, art displays, walking tours, picnicking, performances and more. Learn more at vashoncemetery.org and mukaifarmandgarden.org.

Ciscoe Morris: The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will sponsor a talk at Vashon Theatre by popular PNW horticulturist Ciscoe Morris from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 14 on all things gardening. Cisco delivers more than fifty presentations a year on topics ranging from environmentally friendly garden design to plants that attract hummingbirds. A $10 donation is encouraged at the door, but the event is free for pre-registered Garden Club members.

Inclusion island picnic: Join Inclusion Island, a group of adults with developmental disabilities and their friends and family, for a summer picnic from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, at Bethel Church, located at 14736 Bethel Lane SW. Rowing party: Vashon Island Rowing Club invites all present and past VIRC junior and adult rowers to its 35th Anniversary All-Alumni Row and Potluck Brunch from 8-10 a.m., Sunday, August 17 at the Jensen Point Boathouse. For details, contact Debby at info@vashoncrew.com.

Flea Market: Vashon Eagles hosts their second outdoor flea market from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 23. It will include vendors of all kinds and hidden treasures from plants to jewelry to tools to clothing and more. Artists John Browne, Ron Hook and Kat Eggleston will perform from 1-3 p.m., and food vendors will serve up meals. The market has room for 30 vendors, with some spots that have electricity and water. All aboard: The Virginia V, a steamboat that served Vashon from 1922 to 1938, returns from Lake Union to Vashon’s north end passenger ferry dock on Sunday, August 24, for a cruise around Vashon and Maury Islands to support the Vashon Heritage Museum — and there are two chances for the public to join the cruise: A kids’ cruise to Blake Island in the late morning, and an adult cruise that afternoon circumnavigating Vashon and Maury islands. Farmers Market: The Vashon Island Growers Association’s Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday at the Village Green through September 27. Visit vigavashon.org/market.

Free community dinners: Held Mondays through Fridays from 5-5:30 p.m. at the Vashon Presbyterian Church (17708 Vashon Highway SW) by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness.

• SENIOR CENTER •

Enjoy a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the following activities throughout the week at the Vashon Senior Center, 10004 SW Bank Road, unless noted otherwise:

Virginia V: At 1 p.m. on Friday, August 8, staff from the Heritage Museum will deliver a talk and slideshow about the Museum’s Virginia V cruise around the island on August 17.

Song bath: Experience a song bath by the Vashon Threshold Choir from 2-3 p.m. on August 8. The choir brings comfort through song to the bedsides of those at thresholds of living and dying.

Native art: At 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, Tlingit artist Odin Lonning will give a presentation on Northwest Coast Native art forms and their uses, with examples of his own artwork, ceremonial regalia and traditional music.

Death Café: Meets 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. It is a discussion group about death and making the most of life, rather than a grief support or counselling session. For questions, call Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232 or Brad Davis at 206-799-7235. The next meeting is August 13.

Strength training: Starting in August, from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, join trainer Zoe at the side room for a multi-level strength training class using resistance bands, light weights, and even cans to build strength, stability, and confidence. All levels welcome.

Grief ritual: Islanders are invited to share and witness each other’s grief on the first Sunday of each month from 1-2 p.m. Questions? Call Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232, or Brad Davis at 206-799-7235. The next meeting is September 7.

Grief support: Kenny Alton, counselor at Vashon Youth and Family Services, will facilitate the “Grief is Grief” support group, a six-week meet up group from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting September 18 and sponsored by the Senior Center which supports those processing grief. The group is limited to 12 people. There is no cost for the meetings; please register by calling Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232.

Movement class: Cultivate inner strength during 60-minute classes that weave basic yoga postures, chi -gong, breath awareness, and various energy medicine techniques. Classes take place 1-2 p.m. on August 11, 18, and 25 and are free for Senior Center members.

Vashon Park District: 6:15 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12 at the Ober Park Administration Building, 17130 Vashon Hwy SW and via Zoom. The board meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Visit vashonparks.org.

Vashon Island School District: 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 6 at Chautauqua Elementary School, Room 302, 9309 SW Cemetery Road. The board normally meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, but the Aug. 14th meeting was moved back one week. Visit vashonsd.org.
