Vashon Eagles: “Hogwild Hoedown,” the annual end-of-summer pig roast at the Vashon Eagles, will take place starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Eagles clubhouse and grounds located at 18134 Vashon Hwy SW. The event will include music, family fun, a corn-hole tournament, drink specials and more.
Indivisible Vashon: Meets from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Vashon United Methodist Church. Michael Tanaka, on Pramila Jayapal’s team, will join via Zoom, with updates and to answer questions. The group will also discuss the 1 Million Rising initiative, non-compliance opportunities and get updates on upcoming elections. Find out more at indivisiblevashon.org.
Support group: The National Alliance of Mental Illness friends and family support group will resume meeting monthly starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the library at the Presbyterian Church at 17708 Vashon Highway SW. For more information call Pastor Leigh Weber at 425-221-1142. This group provides support for those who are living with a loved one experiencing mental illness.
Stupid Bike Night: Shortly after dusk on Friday, Sept. 5, an annual free-range event, Stupid Bike Night, will take to the streets. The parade of bicycles features riders of all ages tooling through the center of town on outlandish forms of tricked-out, lit-up, pedal-powered means of transportation. Wild, colorful costumes of riders include disco attire, space suits, neon wigs, gladiator garb, Amish country clothing, giant baby clothes, glow lights and glitter. All are invited to watch or participate.
Harris Levinson: A celebration of the life and legacy of islander Harris Levinson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Open Space for Arts & Community, at 18870 103rd Ave SW. The event will be held outdoors; bring a low chair or blanket. A shuttle service will run from the north end and south end ferry docks, as parking is limited. Reuseable event: If you have materials you no longer want but which are too good to throw away, bring them to Zero Waste Vashon’s “ReUseable Collection Event” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 7 at the K2 north parking lot, 19215 Vashon Highway SW. Collected items will include good condition windows, light fixtures, cabinets, furniture and clean lumber. Half of proceeds go to ZWV’s efforts to turn waste into resource. Japan Festival: Mukai Farm & Gardens will present its 6th annual Japan Festival from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. This free event celebrates Japanese culture and heritage with a lineup of performances, activities and food for all ages. For more information visit mukaifarmandgarden.org.
Garden Club: The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8 at the Bethel Church gym. There will be a club business meeting, followed by guest speaker Chris Hedgpeth, who will present a talk on growing organic hardneck garlic in the Pacific Northwest. Hedgpeth, of Forest Garden Farm, will share his farm’s garlic growing practices and will also have his organic seed garlic available to purchase.
Food bank tour: Tour the current and future sites of the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank with the food bank’s executive director and board members. RSVP by contacting minta@vashonfoodbank.org, and plan to meet at the current food bank location at 10030 SW 210th St, behind the Sea Mar Clinic. Upcoming tour dates include Thursday, Sept. 9 from 3-4:30 p.m.
Farmers Market: The Vashon Island Growers Association’s Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday at the Village Green through September 27.
Free community dinners: Held Mondays through Fridays from 5-5:30 p.m. at the Vashon Presbyterian Church (17708 Vashon Highway SW) by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness.
• SENIOR CENTER •
Enjoy a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the following activities throughout the week at the Vashon Senior Center, 10004 SW Bank Road, unless noted otherwise:
Strength training: From 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, join trainer Zoe at the side room for a multi-level strength training class using resistance bands, light weights, and even cans to build strength, stability, and confidence. All levels welcome.
Death Café: Meets 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. It is a discussion group about death and making the most of life, rather than a grief support or counselling session. For questions, call Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232 or Brad Davis at 206-799-7235. The next meeting is August 27.
Ahoy! Older adults will have a chance to enjoy the swashbuckling adventure of the Vashon Pirate Camp, located at 10800 SW 133rd Street, from 1 -4 p.m. on August 28, in partnership with the Senior Center. RSVP by calling 206-463-5173. Come dressed as a Pirate or in clothes that can be torn and tattered. Wear walking shoes and bring a water bottle. Visitors should be comfortable on their feet for most of the event. Pirate food will be served.
Grief ritual: Islanders are invited to share and witness each other’s grief on the first Sunday of each month from 1-2 p.m. Questions? Call Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232, or Brad Davis at 206-799-7235. The next meeting is September 7.
Grief support: Kenny Alton, counselor at Vashon Youth and Family Services, will facilitate the “Grief is Grief” support group, a six week group from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting September 18 to support those processing grief. The group is limited to 12 people. There is no cost for the meetings; please register by calling Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232.

Vashon-Maury Community Council: A special meeting will be held to consider inputs to the King County Strategic Climate Action Plan from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Vashon Land Trust Building as well as via a Zoom link at tinyurl.com/25he2k84.
