Tennis team wins, forges ahead

Week six started out well for the Pirate tennis team. Last Tuesday, members had a rematch with Cascade Christian; this time it was a home match, and the Pirates pulled out a 5-0 victory. The Pirates struggled, but won against Cascade’s number one singles and doubles teams, and showed superior depth at the other matchups.

In the match of the day, Amadeo Gallina took a hard-earned win in number one singles. In a 2 1/2 hour match, Gallina dropped the first set, won a close second and then took the win in a third set tiebreaker: 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. The same pattern applied in number one doubles, where Hank Rogers and Wyatt Keppler lost the first set, then improved enough at the end to take a 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 win. Towner Anderson took a nice 6-2, 6-2 win at number two singles. Mason Rice and JJ Bogaard had a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win at number two doubles and Cameron Bedard and Zach Van Dusen completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 . The junior varsity teams played three matches and won each match convincingly

On Saturday, the Pirates hosted another rematch against South Kitsap. This match looked daunting all along; South Kitsap is a strong team and was missing a key player when the Pirates defeated them earlier in the year. With half the Pirate varsity out with injuries and illnesses, this looked like a tough match. As it turned out, for whatever reason, South Kitsap didn’t show up, and the match was turned into a Saturday practice. On Monday, after press time, the team hosted Franklin Pierce. It will travel to Charles Wright on Thursday for what is probably the most important match of the season.
