Beachcomber wins 10 awards at annual, statewide WNPA newspaper contest

The Beachcomber brought home 10 awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers’ Association (WNPA) 2017 Better Newspapers Contest, a statewide competition for small community newspapers.

The newspaper, competing against other papers with similar circulation sizes, won awards for news reporting and feature writing, as well as awards for several ads it designed and a special sections it published between 2016 and 2017.

Editorial Department:

First place:

Best lifestyle feature story – Juli Goetz Morser (“Living ‘vibrantly in the face of adversity’: Islander learns to live life with cancer,” Oct. 19, 2016).

Best personality profile, short – Juli Goetz Morser (“Art legacy: daughter of island artist exhibits her work,” July 27, 2016).

Second place:

Best personality profile, long – Anneli Fogt (“Young farmer ventures into field with humanitarian perspective,” May 25, 2016).

Best lifestyle feature story – Juli Goetz Morser (“Island woman hikes nearly 8,000 miles to earn Triple Crown of Hiking,” Jan. 17, 2017).

Third Place:

Best news story, long – Sarah Low (“Former islander worked to pass new Washington law that brings suicide prevention activists, gun rights groups together,” April 20, 2016).

Best personality profile, short – Juli Goetz Morser (“Island artist constructs new work out of old or discarded objects,” Nov. 23, 2016).

Best sports feature – Sarah Low (“Former junior rowers, now at different colleges, compete in regatta together,” Aug. 10, 2016).

Best multiple-advertiser ad, 1-2 pages – Daralyn Anderson, Carrie Van Buren and Dennis Clouse (Halloween Safety Game, Oct. 2016).

Third Place:

Best multiple-advertiser ad, 1-2 pages – Daralyn Anderson and Nance Scott (Senior section, June 2016).

Ad campaign for single advertiser – Daralyn Anderson and Dennis Clouse (Core Centric Personal Training Center).
