Track teams placed third, fifth in League competition

Vashon High School Stadium played host to the Nisqually League track and field championship held last Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11.

All six of the Nisqually league schools came to Vashon, with Bellevue Christian taking the team title for both the boys and girls. The Pirate girls team placed third, and the boys’ team placed fifth in the team scoring. The girls 4 x 100 meter relay team provided an exciting finish to their race as they just edged out Charles Wright for the victory in a time of 53.14. The team consisted of Phoebe Wilke, who also claimed a victory in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 1:03.21; Jacquelyn Bostock, who placed second in the 100 meters in 13.08; Ava Bostock, who took fourth in the 400 meters in 1:04.73, and Alex Picco.

Lucy Boyle placed third in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 13.09. Payton Venturi placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet. Both Grace Christie and Indigo Assink tied for second in the high jump at 4 feet 6 inches. Jordan Bezoenik took second in the Javelin with a throw of 87 feet and 7 inches, and Isabella Mediavilla placed third in the same event with a throw of 84 feet 3 inches.

On the boys’ side, Logan Higuera took the top spot in javelin, placing first with a throw of 135 feet, 10 inches. Finian Long took fourth in high jump at 5 feet 6 inches. The boys 4 x 100-meter relay team just got edged out by Cascade Christian at the finish as they placed second in a time of 45.46. The team consisted of Sol Dehnert, who placed fourth in the long jump, 200 meters and 100 meters; Jess Leysath, who placed thrd in the 200 meters in 24.28; Kalen Cunningham, who placed sixth in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, and Alex Lee.

A pair of Pirates saw success in the hurdle events as Alex Macomber-Straight finished fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 19.20, which was his personal best time, and he also finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 48.26. Schuyler Ricks placed fifth in the 110 high hurdles with his personal best time of 19.35 and Ricks also placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 49.19. Next up for the Pirate post-season will be the 1A West Central District track & field meet this Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18 at Bremerton High school.
