This past Saturday, Nov. 2, saw Vashon’s Ella Yarkin take eighth place in the girls’ race at the District III Championships to qualify for the State Cross Country Championships in Pasco on Nov. 9.
The boys’ team, on the other hand, did not advance to the championship meet.
Yarkin ran the 5k course at Chambers Bay in University Place under sunny but crisp temperature in twenty-one minutes and 59 seconds amid a group of Klahowya runners — the team that won district. Yarkin will be competing at the state level for the third time in three years.
Barely missing the cut by one and five places, respectively, were Pirates Ben Larson and Sean Robertson, who finished in 15th and 19th place in the boys’ race. Larson finished seven seconds behind the 14th runner, just missing the cut-off to the state meet; Robertson was five seconds back from Larson.
Klahowya also won the boys’ race while the Pirates came in fifth out of seven teams.
