NAMI Support Group

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Friends and Family Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, on Zoom at the following link: zoom.us/j/442169680. Racial Equity Training

Islanders and activists Janie Starr and Ty Cunningham will join a panel addressing the “how” of activism through a racial equity lens. The workshop, “Exploring Partnerships in Collaboration and Coalition Building,” will be presented by Washington Indivisible Network (WIN) and Indivisible National Training Manager, Kimberly Tucker.

Tucker, joined by Starr, Cunningham and others, will share their stories of building relationships and community to accomplish together what could not otherwise be achieved and sustained. The workshop will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, on Zoom. Registers at tinyurl.com/ycx3p527.

Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling

Bring styrofoam and plastic waste to the First Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW. Consolidating with your neighbors to keep the line short. A downloadable list of “What We Accept” can be found at ZeroWasteVashon.org and on the Vashon Styrofoam Recycling Facebook Page. Water District Meeting

Water District 19’s next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in the district’s board room at 17630 100th Ave. SW. Masks are required.

Free Tax Preparation

Vashon AARP Tax-aide is preparing taxes at the Vashon Lutheran Church again this year. Tax preparation is free and by appointment only. Email your name and phone number to VashonAarp@gmail.com to be contacted about an appointment. Staff members are all vaccinated and boosted and you will need to prove you have been vaccinated. Note: the group cannot prepare returns with depreciation, futures or options traded, moving expenses, virtual currencies and some other complications.

Intro to Woodworking

Vashon MakerSpace is offering classes covering basic woodworking techniques and the safe operation of commonly used power tools.

Topics include steps of woodworking procedure, cost estimation, planing, jointing, ripping, crosscutting, dado joint construction, hardware and fastener applications and wood finishing. Students will construct a step stool, plant stand, or similar item. Instructors are experienced builders and woodworking instructors.

Classes ($180 for six sessions, materials included) are currently filled for Monday and Thursday sessions from Feb. 7 to March 15, or Feb. 10 to March 17, at the Vashon High School Woodshop. Email classes@vashonmakerspace.org, to be placed on a waitlist or a Wednesday evening class beginning Feb. 9, or to learn more about Spring Quarter class offerings.

Students must be fully vaccinated and wear an N95 mask.
