‘We Need to Talk about Oscar’ with Robert Horton

In anticipation of the 94th Academy Awards, National Society of Film Critics member and host of Voice of Vashon’s “The Music and the Movies” Robert Horton will offer some opinions on this year’s Oscar nominations, snubs and potential award winners at an upcoming “Talk on the Rock.”

“We Need to Talk about Oscar” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 at Kay White Hall. The event will also be live-streamed. General admission tickets are $20, and are available for purchase at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Mukai Farm & Garden Spring Open House

Stop by Mukai Farm & Garden during their Spring Open Houses, which include the opportunity for self-guided tours of the Mukai home and various activities. From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, visitors can practice Japanese brush strokes together and can write their New Year’s resolutions or their name in Kanji, one of the three scripts used in the Japanese language.

Scholarships available

Vashon Care Network, in partnership with Vashon Senior Center, is offering seven scholarships each worth more than $900 for those studying to become a Home Care Aide (HCA). The scholarship pays for training (mostly online) and other fees to become a certified HCA. This is a great way to help older adults remain on the Island and age in place. Apply by March 1. Mattress recycling available

Recycling services for mattresses, box springs, and futons is now available at the Vashon transfer station. A $30 mattress handling fee is required to offset the cost of the expanded service. The fee applies to each mattress, box spring and/or futon, regardless of size, condition, or whether the item is recycled or disposed of. More information about how to recycle or dispose of mattresses, paint, electronics and other unneeded or unwanted items is available on King County’s website at tinyurl.com/23cde6k9.

Blind Community Forum

The Seattle Washington State Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) will hold a virtual town hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, to hear from the blind community as well as to share agency changes and updates. Closed captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided. For additional assistance with accommodation, please contact Yvonne.Grimes@dsb.wa.gov. The event is free, but registration is required at dsb.wa.gov/events/Community-Forum.
