Vashon Island Fire & Rescue Fire Cadets drew their year to a close last week with the program’s annual live fire training exercise.

The cadets learned firsthand about fire behavior and different methods of fire attack in the controlled environment of VIFR’s training grounds.

The Fire Cadet program (previously called Explorers) provides young adults ages 14-19 with hands-on firefighting and emergency medical services training alongside the island’s firefighters and EMTs. Cadets gain insight into what it takes to pursue a career in the fire service and develop skills in leadership, teamwork and community service—beneficial in any career path they may choose.

Applications for the next Fire Cadet season, which starts at the beginning of the next school year, are available at VIFR’s administration office at Station 55, or by calling 206-463-2405. All interested students are encouraged to apply.
