LETTER: Pick up origami hearts to give them away next week

Valentine’s Day is coming soon, and although many people don’t believe in the commercialism, the sense of that day — pausing to consider those you love and appreciate — seems like a very good thing.

Particularly with all that is going on in this country, just showing kindness seems appropriate.

For the sixth year in a row, I will be handing out packets of 10 origami hearts to strangers, asking them to, on Valentine’s Day, keep one for themselves and give the other nine to anyone they think needs a heart. There is no catch, cash required, or gimmick in this gift. The only purpose is to make people smile.

I will be giving away 50 of these packets the weekend of Feb. 10 and 11 to anyone who wants one. The location will be Island Paper Chase, between Valise Gallery and The Creamery on Vashon Highway.

Islanders, please help me bring a moment of happiness to people through giving away hearts.
