Letter to the editor: Alleged perpetrator had a difficult childhood (May 26, 2010)

I send this letter devastated with heavy sadness. I have just read The Beachcomber’s online story about Jeremy Maxson.

I know this family and care about all of them. What Jeremy allegedly did was wrong, and there is no excuse for his actions. I believe he knows this. According to his family, he came forward and called CPS to seek help.

Jeremy grew up on Kingsbury Beach with many brothers, his mother and stepfather. I have known Jeremy since childhood; he is a good 10 years younger than I am. I remember his family and circumstances; these are not pleasant memories.

We all watched and noticed, but nobody stepped in, as this was just the way it was in the ’80s. This family struggled in many ways, and the boys hit hard every bump and pothole that a dark and troublesome journey through childhood could hold. I have watched Jeremy grow through the years with amazement that such a kind-hearted man could come from such chaos and confusion.

I am a child advocate, and I stand strong in my positions. I am remembering Jeremy as a child and feel compassion and understanding for this now-grown man. I am so sorry for all he has been through and put others through.

The mother of the victim in this story has been given strong and solid advice in helping the children. They are all receiving professional help and being well cared for. Please hold this entire family in your hearts and prayers; they are good people in tragic happenstance.
