ICE advertisment

I was disappointed to see the pseudo military ICE insert in last week’s Beachcomber.

At first sight it looks like a military advert, picture of Uncle Sam, happy groups of family or a lone soldier gazing into the future etc. etc. etc.

On closer examination, on the last page you will see the ICE signup email address. It is not military. It’s fake military. Military lite.

I am indeed surprised that the Beachcomber would solicit ICE recruits. I thought we were beyond that.

Perhaps this is the doing of the Carpenter Media Group — who owns the Beachcomber and 100 other community newspapers.

Perhaps this was an innocent oversight of The Beachcomber, nonetheless, it should not go unnoticed.

As we all know, ICE spreads hate and violence. It needs to be eradicated.

I am hoping that in the future The Beachcomber will cease support of all things ICE. If not, perhaps it’s time to succeed from the Carpenter Media Group.

Thanks for listening,

Elizabeth Nye

Christmas invitation

During a time when the world can feel uncertain or divided, the symbols of the Christmas season speak powerfully: a glowing candle piercing the darkness, the singing of carols, a warm cup of cocoa with a friend, a hand extended in welcome, time with family.

These moments remind us that even the smallest act of kindness can make a meaningful difference, and that the light we share together is stronger than we might imagine.

While our churches and denominations are not all exactly alike (nor should they be), we all welcome you to join any of us on Christmas Eve, as we light candles, sing carols and celebrate the reason for this season, the birth of Love.

Our island churches have a variety of worship times on Christmas Eve, and we hope joining one of them will be part of your evening celebration. In a world that is too often overshadowed by uncertainty, conflict and division, Christmas proclaims a truth that does not and will not fade: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Our collective prayers are that you find hope, love and joy in this season and that you find others to walk alongside you in your journey.

Warm blessings for a meaningful Christmas.

Leigh Weber, pastor of Vashon Presbyterian Church
