No Kings Day

I’m adding to the call to protest, so well stated so well stated by James Rickard last week.

I was raised in a patriotic, hard-working, military family. My father was a B-52 Aircraft Commander, flying the DEW line across North America during the Cold War when I came of age in Minot, North Dakota.

At Thanksgiving Dinner, after giving thanks, we would toast the Base Commander and then the President.

That would no longer be happening in this current environment. When the first protests began this April 5 with “Hands Off,” I knew my Indivisible Vashon colleagues were going to the protests in Seattle and Olympia, but I couldn’t take that time away from our office.

So I determined to go to Vashon’s main intersection, even if I was the only one to show up. I commandeered two broomsticks and attached as many “Hands Off” tagboard signs as I could fit onto them. I was not alone that day, happily made new friends, greeted old friends, felt alive and even brave.

I will continue to protest until this administration has been stopped and held to account for its crimes against our country and against our fellow human beings. While I don’t want to be arrested, I will not stand by while our hard-working Vashon immigrants and their children are illegally taken. Besides that, we don’t know who will be next.

Join us at the main intersection on Oct. 18, from 1-3 p.m. to protest authoritarianism in all its ugliness. If you would like to make a sign, I have tagboard and a big marker to share. Bring a broomstick, if you like.
