An acclaimed musical duo, Tingstad and Rumbel, will take the stage at Blue Heron Art Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.

Guitarist Eric Tingstad and double reed/ocarina master Nancy Rumbel, joined by electric bass guitarist Gary Shelton, will play favorite tunes from their previous 18 recordings, as well as selections from their 2009 CD, “Leap of Faith,” which was released on Inauguration Day.

“Leap of Faith” has been billed as “all-American homestyle music, with eclectic flavors and international spice.” Music on the CD ranges from traditional Asian folk tunes, Tex-Mex stylings, Caribbean rhythms, American songbook covers and Americana roots.

“Acoustic instrumental music simply doesn’t get any better — period,” said radio producer and host Bill Binkelman of Minneapolis.

Tingstad and Rumbel began their musical collaboration almost 25 years ago. Their debut album, “The Gift,” was lauded by The New York Times, The Washington Post and Billboard. The duo performed at Carnegie Hall in 2000 and their 2003 release, “Acoustic Garden,” won a Grammy.

Tingstad, a Seattle native, learned guitar in the Segovia tradition at Western Washington University. He attributes where he is now to the diverse influences of Led Zeppelin, Ravi Shankar, Hawaiian slack key guitar and Martin Denny. Tingstad was nominated for a Grammy in November 2006 for his solo project, “Southwest.”

Rumbel grew up in San Antonio and studied world music at Northwestern University. She toured with the Paul Winter Consort before connecting with Tingstad.

Both musicians live in the Seattle area and say they love performing for audiences on Vashon Island.
